There are 5 parts: - The Introduction Paragraph (3-4 sentences)

- The Conclusion Paragraph (3-4 sentences)
1. The Introduction Paragraph: Sentence 1: This sentence should be a general statement about the topic. - Example:
For many people, a post-secondary education is an extremely important goal.
Sentence 2: This sentence should be a more specific statement that brings the reader's attention closer to your thesis statement. - Example:
Centennial College is a post-secondary institution that can help individuals achieve this goal.
Sentence 3: This is your 3 point thesis statement and it needs to include the three main areas that you are going to talk about in your essay. - Example:
At Centennial College, students can learn listening, speaking, and time management skills.
2. Body Paragraph 1: (This paragraph will focus on listening skills) Sentence 1: Remember Topic Sentences? This sentence should introduce the reader to your first main point. - Example:
Listening skills are developed at Centennial College.
Note: The following sentences in your paragraph should have details and examples that show exactly how listening skills are developed at Centennial College. These following sentences must directly support the main point of this paragraph. Sentence 2: This sentence is your first main detail or first supporting point. - Example:
Classes require students' full attention since instructors cover a lot of material from the text and course handouts.
Sentence 3: This sentence can be an explanation of the previous sentence, or a more specific example of your main detail or first supporting point. - Example:
If students do not pay close attention in class, their marks may be compromised since the material discussed in class is normally covered on most tests, assignments and exams.
Sentence 4: This sentence can be a very specific example of your first supporting point. - Example:
For example, instructor 'A' states in his/her course outline that class attendance is mandatory. This means that if student 'B' misses one class, he/she is responsible for all notes, handouts and discussion material covered in the class.
Sentence 5: This sentence is your second main detail or second supporting point. - Example:
Listening skills are also developed at Centennial College through group work.
Sentence 6: Same as "Sentence 3" of this section Sentence 7: Same as "Sentence 4" of this section Sentence 8: This sentence can be your concluding sentence. Remember your topic sentence; this is very similar. You need to give the reader the sense that this paragraph is over and your First Main Point is proven/reasonable/valid. - Example:
Through class discussion, group work and material covered in class, we can clearly see that listening skills are practiced and developed in Centennial College.
3. Body Paragraph 2: Same instructions as Body Paragraph 1, but supporting the second of your three points (2nd point was speaking). 4. Body Paragraph 3: Same instructions as Body Paragraph 1, but supporting the last of your three points (3nd point was time management). 5. Concluding or Conclusion Paragraph: This should be a re-statement of the ideas offered in your opening paragraph, but you have to find new ways to express thee thoughts. Refer to the instructions for Introduction Paragraph. When you are writing this part of your essay, reverse the order of instructions. Write your sentences according to the instructions titled "Sentence 3", then "Sentence 2" and finally "Sentence 1" . Example: Time mangement skills learned in college will be of value throughout a graduate's career. Skills learned at Centennial College: listening, speaking and time managment, will be useful in all phases of one's life. Post-secondary education can transform lives.
