Evaluating Websites

  • Be particularly critical when viewing websites, as the quality varies widely!
  • Be even more vigilant when searching topics that are controversial (e.g. abortion, creationism) as passionate debate sometimes compromises rational argument.
  • Be aware that "bogus sites" exist on the Internet (also known as hoax, spoof or scam websites). These sites present erroneous or misleading information in a way that seems real. Some present revisionist material [i.e. a different account] on such topics as the Holocaust, or hate-related topics. Others are simply humorous spoofs - some (but not all) of these include disclaimers letting you know that the information is not to be taken seriously.
  • Recognize when using Google that some sites listed at the top are advertisements - website owners have paid for placement there.
