Borrowing from the Library

Loan periods and renewals

Loan periods:

Most books can be borrowed for two weeks. Some higher-demand items have shorter loan periods.

The following items may be used inside the Library only:

  • Most Reserve items
  • Reference books
  • Magazines and periodicals (paper format)

Most of our Videos and DVDs are three-day loans.  Students, college staff and instructors can borrow these videos and DVDs.

Some higher demand videos and DVDs can only be used by students inside the Library or booked by instructors for classroom use.

  • Instructors can reserve videos in person, by phone, or online. See Reserve Videos to Show in Class.
  • Students can borrow these reserve videos for use in the Library.

Renewals:

One and two-week loan books may be renewed if:

  1. the books have not been requested by anyone else
  2. the borrower's accrued fines/overdues are less than $5.00

Students and employees currently enrolled or employed at Centennial College may renew books online through the library catalogue:

  1. Click here to renew items.
  2. Enter your user ID (your student, employee or library card number), your PIN (the last 4 digits of your student, employee or library card number), and click on "Login"
  3. Select item(s) to be renewed and click on "Renew Items"

Students, employees, alumni, community members and retired faculty and staff who have a library card may also renew items in person at the Library help desk or by telephone.

Borrowers with unpaid fines of $5.00 or more may not borrow or renew items.  If you do not pay your fines or return overdue items, the College may withhold your diploma, grade reports, and transcripts. You will also be prevented from registering. Fines and fees are used to purchase more materials for the Libraries.

If you lose an item, or return an item damaged, you will be charged the full cost to replace the item plus a $15.00 processing fee.

Reserves collection

Reserve materials are books, videos, course readings, etc. that your instructor or the librarian has set aside for use in the Library.  Due to high demand, Reserves are available for shorter loan periods so all students have equal access to assigned materials.  Reserves may not be taken out of the Library unless otherwise indicated.

To access Reserves, go to the Library help desk with your student ID and the title of the Reserve material. See Course Reserves to learn how to search the library catalogue for Reserves.
