Off-Campus Access Troubleshooting

Off-campus access to most of the e-resources is available for currently registered Centennial College students (full-time and part-time) and College employees. Centennial College alumni who are not currently registered in any courses do not have off-campus access to the e-resources.

1. Activate Your Account
To access the e-resources off campus, you must first visit, telephone, or email library staff to ask them to activate your library account. This is not done automatically for new students or employees. It only takes a minute, and once done, your access to e-resources from off campus should be valid for the duration of your time at Centennial College.  

2. Login with Your Number & PIN
Click on an e-resource to login with your activated student/employee/library card number and your PIN (personal identification number). Students usually login with their student number, and the PIN is the last 4 digits of the student number. See Your Number & PIN for more information. The login screen looks like this:

 If you try to login and receive the message Bad ID/PIN or if your PIN has expired, contact library staff, who will activate/reactivate your account. 

Tips and Known Issues:

Safari Browser Users

  • Older versions of the Safari browser are not compatible with remote access to the e-resources. You will see an error message advising you of "too many redirects." Download the latest version of Safari, or use an alternate browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Norton Internet Security or Other Personal Firewall Users

  • If you are using a personal Firewall, you may need to reconfigure it to allow session cookies from our site. In Norton Internet Security 2005, uncheck "Browser Privacy" under Custom Level in Customize Privacy Settings of Privacy Control. In some cases, the Internet Security firewall has to be temporarily disabled to access the e-resources.
  • In particular, the Norton Personal Firewall product from the Rogers Yahoo! Online Protection package blocks access to the e-resources. The only way to fix this issue is to uninstall the Personal Firewall section of the Online Protection package. If you continue to have problems, please contact us.
  • Please be sure that you are safely modifying your computer settings. Centennial College is not responsible for any damage resulting from making changes to your computer's settings.

Internet Explorer Security Settings

Internet Explorer users who have trouble accessing the e-resources should follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools Menu and click on Internet Options. Select the Security tab.
  2. Select Trusted sites then select Sites
  3. Uncheck "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"
  4. Type http://*.ocls.ca/ then select the Add button.
  5. Type http://*.centennialcollege.ca/ then select the Add button then select OK.
  6. Select the Privacy tab
  7. Select the Advanced.... button
  8. Select:
    • Override automatic cookie handing,
    • Accept First-party Cookies,
    • Accept Third-Party Cookies
    • Always allow session cookies
  9. Select OK to close.
  10. Once you have finished close ALL of your Internet Explorer browsers (including this one) and reopen Internet Explorer.

Allow Cookies and Pop-ups

  • Modify your browser's setting to allow cookies and and pop-up windows
