The libraries are learning environments. Please remember to speak at a volume that shows respect for other users of the space. Noise levels in the library are guided by the following policy:

Report noise complaints and disturbances to library staff.

Introduction, Purpose & Scope

The Centennial College Libraries are shared spaces that strive to accommodate diverse academic needs and maintain a respectful environment for all library users.

This policy is to inform all library users of appropriate noise levels and the consequences of non-compliance.

This policy applies to all users (including students, staff, faculty, and community users).

The Libraries are learning environments. Library users should speak at a volume that shows respect for other users of the space.

  • Place cell phone ringers on vibrate or silent.
  • Use headphones to listen to audio devices. Headphone volume should not be audible to others in the area.

Noise levels vary by zone:

  • Silent Zone:  these areas are for individual study.  Cellphone use and conversation are not permitted in the silent study areas. Use headphones for listening to audio devices. Headphones should not be audible to others.
  • Quiet Zone:  these areas are for quiet study of individuals or pairs. Headphones must be used to listen to audio devices. Quiet, infrequent conversation permitted.
  • Collaborative Zone:  these areas are for group work of 2 or more individuals and conversation permitted at moderate volume level.

Each area will be identified by signage.

Report noise complaints and disturbances to library staff.

Users who encounter unacceptable noise levels should direct their complaints to a Library staff member.

If library users are not using the study zones as intended, a library staff member will provide the user with a copy of the guidelines and recommend alternative study space options if available.

Library staff will monitor library spaces regularly as scheduled.

During regular patrols, Library staff will speak to users making excessive noise. Users who fail to comply with the Library’s Noise policy will receive a warning and be informed of Library policy and consequences. If there is continued refusal to comply, the user will be asked to leave the Library.  Security will be called to assist, as necessary.

In the case of individuals who fail to comply with the policy when requested, a report will be made to the Manager, Library Services.

Earplugs are available for all library users at Library Circulation desks.
